Barnsley Museums @ The Glass Works

I was thrilled to be on the project team for a new tourist attraction featuring a trio of museum experiences with cutting edge technology in Barnsley town centre. Barnsley Museums @ The Glass Works set up home in November 2021 at the new multi-million pound development and is thought to be the first Yorkshire museum to open in a purpose built shopping and retail centre.

My role in this project included liaising with designers, selecting a fit-out tender via procurement and curating displays focusing on Barnsley’s past, present and future, combining everything from its heritage and outdoors to art and sport.

Fake or Fortune

In December 2020 the BBC TV programme, Fake or Fortune filmed at the Cooper Gallery in Barnsley. The presenter Philip Mould viewed sketches purchased by Samuel Joshua Cooper as well as Mr Cooper’s notebook as part of an investigation into a work possibly by French artist, Jean Leon Gerome. The show aired in 2021.

My role in this project included researching the subject matter. Liaising with the BBC and the Cooper Gallery Trustees, assisting on the day of filming and writing a blog on the experience for the Barnsley Museums website.

Cooper Gallery Cottage

In 2019 I worked on the project team for the renovation of the Cooper Gallery cottage. The refurbishment has transformed an empty cottage at the rear of the gallery into a modern artist studio space, with exhibition areas and a café. As well as the launch of an innovative, outdoor, digital installation in the gallery’s outdoor space. The £125,000 renovation project and digital installation has taken place thanks to funding from Arts Council England, who supports activities across the arts museums and libraries.

My role on this project included liaising with contractors onsite during building works, recruiting artists to take up residences in the studio spaces. Selecting an artist to produce a new digital installation for the garden and curating artworks on the walls of the newly renovated café area for people to enjoy while they relax and socialise.

Cooper Gallery Fundraising Evening

In 2019 I organised a fundraising evening that was held at the Cooper Gallery and hosted by Ian McMillan and Pierre Maciag. The evening consisted of a glass of bubbly on arrival, buffet food, music provided by Wentworth String Quartet, an auction and raffle. The aim was to raise money for the upkeep and conservation of the Cooper Gallery collection, and I am proud to say we raised just short of £5.000 which helped conserve three French paintings in the collection.

My role on this project included sourcing 45 Items donated by local artists including Terry Brookes and Graham Ibbeson. Writing and producing the auction catalogue. Collecting raffle prizes. Sourcing hosts, entertainment, and food. Speaking with publications including the Yorkshire Post, The Dalesman and Yorkshire life magazine to gain publicity.
